Located within the Marine Science Institute at UCSB, this facility currently allows for the initial stabilization and triage of up to 100 birds during oil spill events. This facility currently consists of a renovated classroom (approximately 1,000 square feet) to allow for appropriate oiled bird holding and a separate 970 square foot outbuilding that can be converted over to spill use, both of which are used by UCSB for educational purposes during non-spill periods. Additionally, two service yards have been identified to allow for trailer and RV use during spill events. Currently, resources are being requested from settlement funds to further develop this facility, including improvements to ventilation and drainage systems, the incorporation of wash and rinse stations and storage and freezer space, and preparation of the service yards to allow for rapid pool placement. |
