In alignment with its mission, the Oiled Wildlife Care Network provides training workshops and outreach seminars for individuals affiliated with its member organizations on the care and capture of oil-affected wildlife. Participation in the OWCN training and outreach program is limited to volunteers and staff from our affiliated organizations. You can get involved by becoming a member of any one of these groups. Online Training Series (OTS)The Online Training Series has taken the place of our Basic Supervisor Training class. It is open to all volunteers and staff of our member organizations. The OTS addresses topics ranging from the history of the network to basic seabird and marine mammal rehabilitation techniques. Those individuals who have successfully completed the series and received certification will be among the first to be contacted when the OWCN is activated and in need of volunteers to care for oiled wildlife. See our Online Training FAQs to learn more. OWCN Annual Rehabilitation ConferenceThe OWCN Annual Rehabilitation Conference is a two-day event for key network member staff and volunteers that provides both oral and hands-on instruction in oiled wildlife response. Recent research findings, protocol updates, animal care, and hands-on wet labs are just some of the topics available to attendees. The program is offered once a year (typically in October), and alternates between a site in Northern and Southern California. More information about the 2009 Conference can be found here. Care Response Team TrainingThis two-day training is for supervisory oiled wildlife rehabilitation staff. Attendees will be selected based on oil spill response experience and previously demonstrated competence in oiled wildlife care. This training will focus on managing animal care, personnel, and paperwork in each area of the oiled wildlife rehabilitation facility. Annual attendance is mandatory for all rehabilitation personnel who will fill staff roles during a declared oiled wildlife response. Recovery Response Team TrainingThis two-day class for wildlife capture staff is designed to train individuals in the proper capture and handling of oil-affected wildlife. The training will encompass health and safety issues, capture techniques, proper data collection, species identification and ecology, and hands-on activities. Attendance is mandatory for personnel who will fill staff roles during oil spill events in California. Member Outreach SeminarsMember organizations may request an Outreach Seminar be conducted at their facility. These seminars are in-person lectures delivered by the OWCN staff focusing on topics such as protocol updates, technology development, and discussions of the member's role during oil spills. |
